With cold weather comes higher electric and gas bills, and many people are starting to think of ways to cut back. Here are the six lowest cost ways to save money by cutting down your energy energy bills.
- Seal ducts. Leaking ducts can contribute to a 25-30% hike in your heating bill. Turn on the duct system’s fan and do an inch-by-inch inspection of your duct system. Close down your crawl space. Turn off the crawl space lights to see where the cold air can be coming in. Seal air gaps with “Great Stuff”. Don’t forget to block off the foundation vents with small rectangles of insulation foam board. Call me if you have a gas furnace down there.
- Think twice about the flue. The fireplace flue ,that is. If you are using a fireplace then you’ll be sucking the house’s warm air up through the chimney and out of the house. Cold, dry air is being sucked in from the outside to replace the warm, moist air that you’ve lost. Use the furnace instead of the fireplace.
- Seal the air gaps in your ceiling. Install air draft “cans” over you recessed lights in the ceiling. Weatherize your attic access hatch. Seal the tops of open chases and dropped soffits. Caulk around pipes and wires that poke up through the ceiling.
- Tune-up. Have your trusted heat-cool pro adjust and clean your heat pump or furnace for best operation. They’ll be sure that your air filter is clean as well.
- Look for holes. Go all over, under, around and through your house and find where there are open holes and seams. They may be letting warm air out or cold air in. You should be asking yourself…” Shouldn’t I seal this hole in my house ?”. Call us for guidance.
You can do this stuff. You don’t have to keep making those extra monthly donations to the utility company. This is good for your pocketbook, good for your comfort, and good for the environment. Good for you!.
