Everybody from building biologists to home health scientists are talking these days about electromagnetic radiation frequency. To simplify the discussion, we are going to refer to the issue as Electromagnetic frequencies (EMFs). Health decline related to electromagnetic sensitivity is considered to be an issue for society as a whole. Let’s check in about this increasing 21st century problem, and consider what you can do about it at your own home.
How do you know if your home has an EMF issue?
Electromagnetic frequencies are odorless, colorless, and textureless. But, like sound, it radiates and pulses and waves within our atmosphere… and are everywhere. Now that everything has gone electric and wireless, there is no let-up from the EMF “pulsing” that our bodies are exposed to at home and work, at school and in community spaces.
Why does it matter if I take precautions against EMFs?
Regrettably, electromagnetic sensitivity is being linked to a wide range of health problems from allergies to autoimmune disease, cancers, chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), and neurological disorders such as Autism and Alzheimer’s. Quality of sleep, detoxing, cellular health, the body’s electro-chemical communications, its nightly healing process, detoxing, rejuvenation… these are not immune from the effects of EMF.
Experts such as the World Health Organization have encouraged a measure called “The Precautionary Principle.” It’s the idea that there’s enough known or perceived risk to indicate early concern and to encourage preventative action. In other words, if you’re not sure your home has an EMF issue, you should take precautionary measures anyway.
We’ve had Nature’s EMFs all along: Earth’s magnetic field, Air ionization, Lightning, Radon, and Solar radiation. As a precaution against harmful exposure to sunlight you’ve learned to shield your eyes and to avoid overexposure of your skin.
Today’s technology brings new sources of EMFs that now inundate our bodies with a wide range of AC/DC electric and magnetic fields, radio-frequency radiation, radioactivity, geological disturbances, sounds, and vibrations. Interrupted day/night cycles, higher frequencies, higher power levels, from outside, and from inside our own homes. We now have new shielding and avoidance behaviors that we must learn.
What are some sources of EMF?
Here is a list of some of the most common sources. Each house has its own unique EMF status. Which of ten of these will be the biggest contributors to excessive EMF pollution at your house?
- Electrical wiring system
- Underground cable, piping, plumbing
- Microwaves and Appliances
- Lighting fixtures and dimmers
- Photovoltaic systems
- Wireless devices
- Beds with metal frames or springs
- X-rays
- Radon gas
- Wireless Internet modems
- Stones and tiles
- Natural radiation from the earth
- Television and computer screens
- Power lines
- Transformers
- Cellular and cordless phones
- Radio Communication Transmitters
- Radar
- Machines and Variable speed motors
- Noise from auto or air traffic
It’s you who decides to take steps to protect yourself from excessive EMF exposure!
In this age of overwhelming, over- powered, in-your-face technology, it is the steps that YOU decide to take that will reduce your over exposure to EMF.
- Reduce your EMF exposure from your cell phone. When you decide that it’s YOUR time, turn your cell phone to Airplane mode, Bluetooth off, Location off. When you decide to be available again, use the cell phone in speaker mode rather than holding the phone up against your head.
- Put the phone across the room rather than leaving it on the bed stand. Whether 6 inches further away, or several feet further away, increasing the distance between you and the EMF offender makes all the difference. You decide.
- Reduce EMF exposure from home-based WiFi. Decide to kick your router out from your bedroom. Decide to power the WiFi down at night and reboot it the next day. It’s bad enough that most of those incoming messages are annoying, but the EMF output from all that communication technology in your sleeping place adversely affects the quality of your sleep too.You decide to put that all “off” until you’ve gotten a restful night’s sleep!
- Move electrical devices at least six feet away from your bed. If the room’s electric fields are too high you can decide to turn off the circuit breaker to your room for the night.
Want to learn more about your home’s EMFs?
Call us to schedule our EMF Screening Exam that we can conduct at your home.
We will measure electrical fields, magnetic fields, and RF inside and outside the home. With this information we’ll then discuss the basics of EMF and health in terms of real EMF conditions present at your home.
You’ll also have access to our collection of additional resources to better understand or expand your knowledge on this topic.
Additionally, we define specific actions you can take to begin reducing your exposure almost instantly. Many of these measures are low cost and simple. Plus, at no additional charge, we remain available should you need further guidance.
