Ring. Brrrrinnggg.
Yesterday, the phone rang, and Mrs. Bayless, my wife, answered. The caller on the other end of the line approached her about purchasing a home security system.
Home security systems, most of which retail under $1000, definitely factor into increases in safety and value in our homes. But in this case, my wife and I chose to exercise caution, as we’re a bit skeptical when salespeople call out of the blue. And major purchases like this one are something we discuss before moving forward.
When folks ask me about home security systems, there are certain things I encourage them to consider up front when they’re still in the research stage.
- Is there a UL designation, indicating that it’s been rigorously tested and evaluated?
- Are there motion sensors and fire detection options?
- Is there a direct link to a month-to-month monitoring service?
If the answers to these questions is a “yes,” then it’s time to move on to other criteria. These might include medical alert options for aging or infirm individuals, mobile device monitoring capabilities, and carbon monoxide detectors, among others. These types of indicators help identify the type of system that best suits the needs of the family and the home. Expect monthly monitoring payments of $25-50 on average.
If the answers to these questions is a “no,” then I tell them to keep looking. In any event, it’s wise to stay away from companies that rely on fear or pushy marketing tactics instead of meeting their clients’ needs. Plus, they should beware long term contracts with no opt out. These are definite warning signs.
Despite the costs, we found that the benefits of a security system include savings on home insurance, as much as 20 percent, a boost in resale value for the home, peace of mind, and a safer, more secure home. With a big family like ours, peace of mind can sometimes be priceless.
What’s your experience with home security systems and monitoring? Mrs. Bayless would like to know.
